Event
2007 September 20, Thursday, 7:00pm — Equinox
Village, Manchester, Vermont (presentation by Cathy Stewart)
The Search for Sun-Like Stars
On Thursday, 20 September, SoVerA member Cathy Stewart will present "The
Search for Sun-Like Stars", a follow-up of SoVerA's March presentation on
The Kepler Mission. It is not necessary to have been at the previous
lecture, to be able to appreciate or enjoy this presentation. This event
will be held at 7:00 PM in the BattenKill Room at Equinox Village, 49 Maple
St. in Manchester, VT.
Our galaxy has over 200 billion stars! How many of those stars are like our
sun? In the search for other habitable planets, finding a star much like
our sun is a key component. NASA's Kepler Mission, launching in 2008, has
the specific goal of detecting transits and finding Earth sized planets in
habitable zones of sun-like stars. Attendees will learn what sun-like stars
are and what kind of stars we see in our sky.
Keep your fingers crossed that skies will be clear on the evening of
September 20! If they are, we will spend the second part of this
presentation outside looking at what we just learned.
SoVerA (Southern Vermont Astronomy) is an organization composed of amateur
and professional astronomers, educators, students and members of the lay
public. We are dedicated to making astronomy much more accessible to all.
Talks and presentations are free and held in venues throughout the southern
Vermont region on the third Thursday of every month, with observing
afterwards, sky conditions permitting. All are welcome. More information
may be found at: www.sovera.org.
