Event
2008 April 8, Tuesday, 7:00pm —
Whiting Library, Chester, Vermont (presentation by Al Boudreau on Extrasolar
Planets and Extraterrestrial Life)
Extrasolar Planets + Extraterrestrial Life
We are finding more and more places where life other than our own may
exist. Specifically, we're detecting planets, with increasingly Earth-like
characteristics, orbiting around nearby stars
On the 8th of April, Al Boudreau will explain the tools astronomers are
using, and the success of amateur astronomers in detecting such planets.
This talk will describe near-future efforts to actually image an
exoplanet, and discuss the question of how we will know if we have found
evidence for life on any of these mysterious orbs.
Mr. Boudreau will discuss a scientific and very accessible treatment of
extraterrestrial life using astronomical observations and various concepts
which explore for signs of life.
This is part of a multi-month lecture series, sponsored by SoVerA, on the
implications of life elsewhere in the universe and our efforts to find it.
The presentation, free and open to the public, will be held at the monthly
SoVerA Meeting, held at the Whiting Library at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, 8 April,
Lower Level.
The Southern Vermont Astronomy Group (SoVerA) is an organization composed
of amateur and professional astronomers, educators, students and members
of the lay public. We are dedicated to making astronomy much more
accessible to all. Talks and presentations are free, open to the public,
and held at the Whiting Library, lower level, on the second Tuesday of
every month, with observing afterwards, sky conditions permitting.
